The EN1176-3 design logic, translated
You do not need the standard's text to evaluate a slide drawing — you need its logic:
- Starting section: a level entry zone with side protection, so children sit before they slide. On platforms above about a meter, a barrier or crossbar encourages a seated start.
- Sliding section: slope is limited (as a rule of thumb, the average stays around 30–40° with short steeper segments allowed) and side heights scale with the slide's fall height — taller and faster means deeper side containment.
- Exit section: the run-out flattens to near horizontal and is long enough to shed speed; exit height above ground is kept low for a controlled landing on impact-attenuating surfacing.
- Impact area: clear space at the exit, free of traffic and obstacles — the surfacing there takes the most wear on any playground (see our surfacing guide).
When you receive a 3D design, the questions to ask are: what is the fall height, where does the exit point, and how long is the run-out? A designer who answers those three fluently has done the engineering.
Stainless steel vs rotomolded HDPE
- Stainless steel (304/316): decades of service life, vandal-resistant, consistent slide speed, the premium look for parks and resorts. In strong sun it needs orientation planning or shade — metal surfaces heat quickly. 316 grade for coastal sites.
- Rotomolded HDPE: lighter, molded into tubes/spirals/waves economically, bright colors, no burn-hot metal edge. Quality varies with wall thickness and UV package — specify both. Dark colors fade first and run hotter in sun.
- Hybrid (steel structure, HDPE bed or tube) is the most common commercial configuration — each material where it is strongest.
Hot-climate note
Surface temperature is the top slide complaint in hot regions. The design answers, in order of effectiveness: orient the slide bed away from afternoon sun, add shade sails over the slide line, choose light colors, and for premium projects consider stainless beds engineered with lower heat retention than dark HDPE. This is a layout decision made in the 3D stage — it cannot be retrofitted cheaply.

How tall can a commercial slide be?
There is no single maximum — height drives requirements. Taller slides need enclosed or deeper containment, protected starting sections, and bigger impact areas, which is why very tall park slides are usually tubes on towers or embankment slides. Practical park installations mostly run 1.5–4 m platform heights.
What age groups can share one slide?
Slides are age-banded by entry challenge and fall height rather than the bed itself. A common park pattern is a low, wide toddler slide separated from a taller school-age slide — cheaper than one compromise slide that suits nobody.
How long does a slide last?
Stainless steel beds commonly outlive the rest of the playground (20+ years). Rotomolded HDPE typically serves 8–12 years outdoors depending on UV exposure; scratched or chalked beds slow down and get replaced as wear items.
Can you replace just the slide on an existing playground?
